Cement ruins, museums and tearooms

With my lovely daughter staying with us for a few days, it was a good excuse to go for a drive up North for the day. Along the way we stopped at the cement works ruins, Warkworth.

We also visited Warkworth Museum which was a delight and worth every cent.

On the way home we stopped at historic Puhoi for the scrummiest Devonshire tea at Puhoi Cottage Tearooms, reputed to be the oldest running tearooms in NZ to serve Devonshire teas.

The tearooms had the most adorable kitty and the owner provided the very cruisy live guitar music as entertainment...what a delight this place is and the scones were HUGE!

A lovely day in all, although i did hyperventilate having to drive past cemeteries i didn't have time to stop at and wander through!

The Kennedy ancestral hunt

I have recently discovered the demise of my G G Grandparents Anthony [aka John] and Mary KENNEDY nee MCCOOK. Mary MCCOOK was born in Armoy, Co. Antrim, Ireland in 1849, to William and Lilly MCCOOK [nee MCLEAN] and was the eldest of 6 children. Anthony John KENNEDY's trade was listed as a carpenter. He was born in Co. Antrim, Ireland and was the son of William KENNEDY, a blacksmith. They married 20 November 1873 at the Balleymoney Registry office, Balleymoney, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Mary was 6 months pregnant and gave birth to their son Thomas Veruna Rowe KENNEDY on 20 February 1874 [he married Helen SELBIE] and within days the three of them were on board 'Varuna' via Glasgow heading to New Zealand. They settled in Christchurch and went on to have another 10 children William , Mary, Margaret Moore, John, Anthony, James, Arthur, Hugh, John William [my g grandfather] and Lena Theresa. Making connections - the s.s. Tainui Disaster

I snap thousands of grave and memorial photos.  Of course sometimes they 'ring bells' in my head as the various facts come together during research.   New Zealand is a small world after all and  lives of those who have crossed each others paths for some reason or other does happen. Here are a couple that have that connection and one of them, Charles WILLIAMS provided a few surprises. The s.s. Tainui Disaster [32] The Tainui which was a wooden cargo vessel, was carrying a load of benzine that it was ill equipped to do so.  The inevitable happened, she exploded near Shag Rock on the Canterbury Coast, off Gore Bay in North Canterbury and all but 1 of the 9 crew were drowned on 16th September 1919.
